A social story for the library
A library visit is a quiet room, one shelf, and a card. Pick a book, let the desk scan it, and bring that book home until the date on a receipt or a stamp.
A library visit is a quiet room, a card, and one book that comes home until the date inside the cover. Voices stay soft. Running stays outside.
The desk
Carol Gray's 10.2 criteria say a social story uses first person or third person, and it does not say you (Social Stories 10.2 Criteria, accessed November 1, 2026). The lines below are first person.
Soft Voice, One Book
I walk in with Mom or Dad. I use a soft voice.
Shelves hold many books. I may look. I pick one.
We take that book to the desk. The card is scanned. The desk may stamp a date, or it may hand us a receipt.
The book is mine to hold until that date. Then it goes back to the desk.
If I want a second book, I ask. The answer may be yes, or it may be one book today.
We walk out. The soft voice can end at the door.

Before you go
Name the voice rule and the number of books before you leave home. If the building has a different rule, write that rule, not this one. If your library uses a return bin instead of a desk scan, change that line.
The card lives in a wallet or a bag you will actually carry. A missing card means the desk may not let the book leave. Check the card before the trip.
One practice
- Find the card.
- Agree on one book, unless you already know the desk allows more.
- Point out where the soft voice ends: the exit door.
- Write the return date on a sticky note when you get home, and put the book beside that note.
Two pictures, the shelf then the desk, can be printed as a two-step picture strip. More strips are on the free tools page.
Later notes go out from the Social Stories email list.
When to ask for help
This trip is an errand. If fear of busy public places has stopped your family from going out for weeks, ask the pediatrician. Bring the voice rule and the book limit you wrote down. The desk plan is not medical care.
FAQ
How many books leave with us?
One, unless the desk rule you already know says more. Ask before you take a second.
What if the card is at home?
The book may have to stay in the building. Go back on a day the card is in the bag.
When does the book go back?
On the date from the stamp or the receipt. Write that date on a sticky note at home and keep the book beside that note.
